It is due to kids staying home and spending more time with friends in different outdoor activities. Defining Sprains

Sprains are injury to any ligament. This injury could be either complete, partial or even small stretching. There are three bones in an ankle that are joined together with the help of a ligament. With the ligament, the ankle joint keep the movement restricted.

Diagnosis of Sprains in Kids

There are 3 grades of sprains in children who wear in intensity to treatment.

Sprain of Grade I

It starts with a child or even adult develop swelling in the joint or ankle. The tenderness makes the joint unstable. A child can carry the injured ankle with slight pain and even can walk a bit.

Sprains of Grade II

This means incomplete injury to the ligament, which makes the injury slightly severe. The child will feel pain with swelling, bruises or tenderness in the muscles. Movement of the joint will not remain normal as in case of grade I injury and a child may not be able to perform all functions. The ankle will not bear any weight and the same can be painful as well.

Sprains of Grade III

This means complete injury to the ligament. It causes intensive pain with bruising and swelling in the joint. It means one is not able to walk or put any weight on the ankle.

Treatment of the Sprained Foot and Broken Ankles in Kids

Since children bone is growing so healing is amazingly fast among kids. This means parents need to make sure to restrict the movement to some extend so any inflammation could be well managed. At home, you could adopt the RICE mechanism, which means Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation of the ankle for the first 2 to 3 days.

Use of crutches is recommended so limited weight is put on the ankle. You need to put the ankle in ice-cold water preferably for 15 to 20 minutes. The process could be repeated 4 to 6 times a day for 48 hours so swelling is reduced.

If a child has a mild sprain foot, then normal movement could be allowed. In the case of grade II or III, constant support will be needed. Make sure to massage the ankle for regular blood flow. It also reduces swelling.
